Zartan Chair by Philippe Starck with Eugeni Quitllet for Magis

The prestigious Italian company Magis has chosen the important meeting with the Salone del Mobile 2011 to present their latest innovation in the field of seating furniture. Here it is in fact, along with Eugeni Quitllet, now Philippe Starck‘s right arm, designed the new Zartan chair for Magis.

This is a chair made entirely from a new approach to industrial production in a post-plastic era called ‘liquid wood’. The new technology uses wood powder (derived from discarded wood pulp-based lignin) which is mixed with a number of other natural materials (fibers and wax or fish oil) to create a strong, non-toxic alternative to petroleum-based plastics. Under high-pressure conditions, the composite material behaves like melted plastic, allowing it to be injected through a nozzle into a mold.

A big step forward, no doubt, on the side of the use of renewable materials, here reworked in several finishes to satisfy the tastes of many potential buyers.

Interestingly, the same way, the gap created by Magis, the world’s leading plastic production seems to want to open a new chance with the decision to shuttle in a post-fossil. We’ll see what the outcome in the future.
