Materia Collection by ExperimentaDesign for Corticeira Amorim

The MATERIA collection, curated by ExperimentaDesign for Corticeira Amorim was presented on April 13 at the 2011 Salone Del Mobile in Milan, the most prestigious international design event – an international release “which aims to inform new Cork application as well as attract the curiosity of the international creative community about its versatility“, explains ExperimentaDesign.

The project started in 2009 when Portuguese holding company Corticeira Amorim challenged ExperimentaDesign to think of cork, a vegetable material that covers the stems and roots of woody plants in the process of replacing the epidermis as a 21st century sustainable feedstock through a new strategic approach based on innovation and new product development.

Responsible for the original concept of the MATERIA collection, ExperimentaDesign invited six Portuguese designers and four foreigners studios who created objects that integrate so fluid and functional in many different environments and experiences of day-to-day.

The result was that 22 objects merge “the personality and unique sensory qualities of cork combined with contemporary design”. Daniel Caramelo, Fernando Brízio, Filipe Alarcão, Marco Sousa Santos, Miguel Vieira Baptista, Pedrita, all from Portugal and BIG-GAME (Switzerland/Belgium), Inga Sempé (France), Nendo (Japan) and Raw Edges (Israel/UK) are the designers of the collection.
